ZEISS Vision develops smart glasses
At the 2016 CES in Las Vegas, January 6-8, the optical pioneer ZEISS introduced its next generation data glasses prototype to the tech community. “The future is about unobtrusively integrated, stylish smart glasses that provide augmented data for business and daily life”, said Dr. Kai Ströder, managing director of the ZEISS financed start-up venture “Smart Optics. “In our perspective it is a prerequisite for the future success of data glasses that they show a superior optical image and are fashionable.”
Optical system for data glasses from ZEISS can be fitted in various frame designs, enabling different styles from business to sport. The wearer will be able to experience augmented reality and app projections in his field of sight as a flying screen in front of his eyes, not as a projection into the eye. The position of the data field can be customized to customer requirements and field of application.
The curved lens with an integrated light path is ready for mass manufacturing, meeting the high quality standards of ZEISS. The manufacturing technology has been developed completely by ZEISS and, in combination with the optical system, represents the true innovation. “We have filed 60 IP families with more than 250 patents for the manufacturing process and different optical features. This is a clear sign of what it really takes to develop such a high-tech optical system and bring it to commercial ends”, added Ströder. “Most innovations are related to the revolutionary production technology, based on ZEISS optical legacy and its proprietary optical manufacturing know-how.”
Matthias Gohl, head of strategy and new business at Carl Zeiss AG said, “The Smart Optics project has been established as a start-up entity by the ZEISS group, but with full access to all ZEISS competencies and resources. The developed optical system is great proof that this innovative business approach was the right decision. We are ready to manufacture the optical system and partner with other leading companies to deliver the best data glass solution for consumers, business and sports.”
