Police arrested 19-year-old Hunter Park for allegedly making online threats toward black students and faculty at the University of Missouri on Wednesday. Authorities said he is not a student at the school.
Mr. Park, 19, was arrested at 1:50 a.m. for making a terrorist threat, the University of Missouri Police Department said in a statement.
Mr. Park, who has not yet been formally charged, is a student at Missouri Science and Technology. He was being held on $4,500 bond, The Associated Press reported.
He posted the threat via the social media app Yik Yak on Tuesday night.
Yik Yak allows people near any given campus to post anonymously. The posts can then be viewed by anyone logged in to the campus’ network in the app. Users do not have to be a student to post in a campus network, but they do need to be within a certain geographical range to access it.
Mr. Park was taken into custody off campus, police said.
“Park was contacted in Rolla, Mo., by the University of Missouri Police and transported to the University of Missouri Police Department in Columbia where he was arrested and processed. Additional information cannot be released due to the investigative nature of the report,” police said in a statement.
The threats allegedly said: “I’m going to stand my ground tomorrow and shoot every black person I see” and “Well tomorrow mizzou will really make national news. Don’t go to campus tomorrow,” ABC News reported.
The threats were made just days after racial tensions boiled over at the university, forcing the school’s president, Tim Wolfe, to resign over the handling of what students called “institutional racism” on campus.
